A Typical Day In Our Toddler Room

Below is a typical day in nursery; nursery planning is incorporated into daily routines throughout the day. Activities change daily to keep our children stimulated. Each activity is adapted to each Child's individual needs.

Morning Session Begins

Arrival: Children arrive at nursery and have freedom to choose any activity they wish to play with. All then join together in the baby room.

Breakfast: The children wash their hands before going to sit together for breakfast. They have a choice of cereal (cornflakes/weetabix/rice crispies) or biscuits. After this our children have toast and a drink of milk or water.

Discussion Time: After breakfast all our children go to the main play area where they put their name on our name board and sit for discussion time. This is where our children tell each other what they have done the night before or where they are going. Children are encouraged to take part in discussion but if they do not want to they can just listen to what the other children say.

Key workers check nappies and change if needed.

Free Play and Focus Activities: All rooms are now open for play; our children can play with whatever they want to do such as:

  • lotto games, books and floor puzzles
  • the playroom has tabletop toys, floor toys, role-play, books, TV, music and dancing
  • the wet/dry room has sand, water, painting, sticking, and drawing

Two focus activities will be set up for the children, which are based on their individual abilities.

Our children move freely between each room, being encouraged to participate in activities the nursery nurse has set up. This time is particularly nice for children with siblings as they can go and visit their brothers and sisters.

Outdoor Play: The children are encouraged to help tidy up ready for outdoor play. The children are encouraged to try and put on their own coats. We make a line at the door and go out to play with the children from the other rooms.

In the summer we have a grassed play area where we have slides, trampolines, etc. Sometimes we have picnics in the garden if the weather is nice. We also have ball games, ring games and fun with the parachute.

Nappies are checked/toileting.

Lunch: Once again our children wash their hands and sit together for lunch. Our cook prepares lunch. Our menu is on display for parents to view and each day we note on our dry wipe board how much each child has eaten. If any child does not like the food on offer, we always offer an alternative. Each child has a 2 course nutritional meal.

Free Play/Naps/Activities: The children go into the preschool room and those children who need a sleep have a nap whilst the other children have free play, including the use of the computer. Once again children are encouraged to participate in planned activities.

Morning Session Ends/Afternoon Session Begins

The children who only attend the morning session will be picked up and the afternoon children are welcomed and settled in.

Activities: The children have two activities set out ready to take part in, these activities are linked into their theme and completed to the child's individual ability. If they don't want to take part in these activities they have free choice with lots of activities such as lotto games, books and floor puzzles.

The continuous provision areas are open throughout the day.

Key workers sit with their children at some time during this time to observe and assess each child. Our children move freely between each room, being encouraged to participate in activities the nursery nurse has set up.

Afternoon Break: Children wash their hands for afternoon break. Our afternoon break differs each day. A typical week will be:

  • Monday: cheese on toast
  • Tuesday: tuna and cheese sandwiches, fruit and crisps
  • Wednesday: Vegetable soup and bread
  • Thursday: cheese and jam crackers, fruit and popcorn
  • Friday: beans on toast.

Check nappies/toileting

Outside Play: This is when we all put on our coats and play outside. In the summer we have a grassed play area where we have slides, trampolines, etc.

End of Afternoon Session: Parents start to arrive to pick up their children. During this hour we go into the garden, soft play and watch some telly with a drink of water or milk. All nappies are checked with and changed if needed.
