A Typical Day In Our Pre-School

Below is a typical day in pre-school; planning is incorporated into daily routines throughout the day. Activities change daily to keep our children stimulated. Each activity is adapted to each Child's individual needs.

Pre-School Begins

Breakfast Time: Pre–School and toddlers joined up. (Toast, cereal and a drink of water/milk).

News time and the name game in the book corner: Children tell us about their news and what they have been up to. We also have the name game out and ask the children to find theire name and place it on the board along with the day, month and weather.

Outdoor Play: We get ready according to the weather, whether it is putting on our hats and sun cream or wellies and waterproof clothing. During outdoor play we do ring games, have free play with the bikes, cars and slides, we also use the parachute.

Activity time one to one: This is based on our planning for the week. In Pre-School they follow the Foundation Stage guidelines. During this time the children's Key Workers observe the children for their developmental records.

Free Play: Our children can choose what they want to do including:

  • lotto games, books and floor puzzles
  • the playroom has tabletop toys, floor toys, role-play, books, TV, music and dancing
  • the wet/dry area has sand, water, painting, sticking, and drawing.

Key workers sit with their children at some point during this time to help them with their colours, numbers, etc. without interrupting the child's free play.

Lunch: Tidy up time and wash our hands ready for lunch. The children are encouraged to wash their own hands independently. All the children sit at the table, they are encouraged to self serve and become independent at doing this. Every child is given a healthy and nutritional lunch and dessert according to the menu.

Discussion Time: This is our time to sit with the children to talk about our focus for this week and get their views on what we are doing.

Free Play: Sand, water, painting, small world construction time.  (Our time to observe and also join in with the children.)

Outside Play: We get ready according to the weather, whether it is putting on our hats and sun cream or wellies and waterproof clothing. During outdoor play we do ring games, have free play with the bikes, cars and slides, we also use the parachute.

Activity Time: This could be small groups or 1-1 based on the planning. Each individual child's needs are meet during this time and the activities are planned to suit their own stages of development.

Snack Time: Time to wash our hands ready for snack, based on our menu. Again, Pre-School children are encouraged to self serve.

Story Time:  This is all linked in to our planning; stories are shared that are appropriate to our room theme. Some children bring stories in from home that may be relevant.

Computer Time: The children learn to play games and paint on the interactive white board and computer. This encourages the children to use lost of skills such as hand-eye coordination, Sharing, Listening, Waiting, following instructions and lots more.

Quiet Time: Time for some rest and watch a DVD or share, so an adult leads stories using our lovely big books with props. We use this time to relax and have some quiet time. This is particularly important as children need rest in order to be able to function properly and gain more energy

Exercise: Jumping jacks and the sensory room. This time is used to exercise our bodies and use lots of different physical skills  such as climbing, jumping and throwng.

Pencil Control/Free Drawing Time:  This is our tabletop activity time and is very much based on free choice; the children are encouraged to sit at the tables but other activities are set out. These type of activities help the children get ready for school.

Pre-School Ends

Parents start to arrive to pick up their children. Children enjoy TV time and generally play freely in their room.

Home time: Nursery closes.
