A Typical Day In Our Toddler Room

Nursery planning (birth to five, EYFS) is incorporated into daily routines throughout the day. Activities change daily to keep our children stimulated.

Morning Session Begins

Arrival: In the morning we open at 7.30 am as the children arrive at nursery they have the freedom to choose any activity they wish to play with. They play in the main toddler room, which is set out with tabletop toys and floor games too.

Breakfast: Breakfast usually starts around 9.00am, but don't worry if you don't make it in time; we will continue to offer breakfast till the morning activities begin.

The children are very independent and are encouraged to wash their hands at the low-level sink before sitting together for breakfast.

Discussion Time/Singing: After breakfast our children go to their designated rooms where the toddlers sit and sing songs and tell each other what they have done the night before. All children are encouraged to take part in discussion time, but if they do not want to they can just listen to what the other children say.

Free Play: All rooms are now open for play; the toddlers have the choice of painting or drawing in the messy room, playing in the home corner, learning to read and write at the writing tables, building in the construction area and lots more.

Our children move freely throughout the room, being encouraged to participate in activities the nursery nurse has set up.

Outdoor Play: The children have outdoor play during the morning, where they can hop, skip and jump on a choice of areas. We have space hoppers and ball ponds, balancing beams and hula hoops, parachutes and trampolines; the list is endless!

Lunch: Once again our children wash their hands and sit together for lunch, where they are encouraged to help themselves. Our menu is on display for parents to view in each room and in the reception.

If any child does not like the food on offer, we always provide an alternative.

Quiet Time/Naptime: Those children who need a sleep have a nap in the baby room whilst the other children have free play and story time between the main play area and the wet/dry room. Once again children are encouraged to participate in planned activities.

Morning Session Ends/Afternoon Session Begins

Activities/Discussion Time: Musical activities and discussion time for the afternoon children who have just arrived is offered at this time.

The children are offered a range of activities which are alternated each day; from structured outdoor play to music and movement or P.E.

Constructive Play: All rooms again are open with a wide range of activities. The children have the opportunity to develop their technology skills on the computer, express themselves in their artwork and have a fantastic time with messy play.

Afternoon Break: Children wash their hands for afternoon break and are always encouraged to serve themselves. Our afternoon break differs each day.

A typical week will be:

  • Monday: Crumpets with a choice of toppings
  • Tuesday: Soft cheese/Pate with toasted soldiers, cherry tomatoes and fruit
  • Wednesday: Vegetable sticks dips and rice cakes

Key Person Groups: Throughout the day the toddlers gather in their Key Person groups for some one to one time, where they can relax and develop their skills further. There are two toddler rooms giving the children the choice of where they would like to play, the smaller of the rooms has access to the outdoor areas providing continuous provision indoors and out.

Hometime: It is now time for Parents to arrive and pick up their children. The children can be seen playing through the large window in the reception area.
