A Typical Day In Our Pre-School

Below is a typical day in pre-school; planning is incorporated into daily routines throughout the day. Activities change daily to keep our children stimulated. Each activity is adapted to each Child's individual needs.

Pre-School Begins

In the morning we open at 7.30 am.

As the children arrive at nursery they have the freedom to choose any activity they wish to play with. there are two main class rooms with in the preschool, however in the morning we all like to join together to greet each other before heading off to play in their designated classroom.

Breakfast: Breakfast usually starts around 9.00 but don’t worry if you don’t make it in time we will continue to offer breakfast till the morning activities begin.

The children are very independent and are encouraged to wash their hands at the low-level sink before sitting together for breakfast. They have a choice of cereal (cornflakes/weetabix/rice crispies) or toast and are offered a drink of milk or water. The children are encouraged to help themselves to drinks through out the day.

Discussion Time: After breakfast our children go to their designated rooms where the register is taken and we sit for discussion time. This is where the children tell each other what they have done the night before or where they are going, this helps us to find out the children's interests so we can all plan the activities around this. Children are encouraged to take part in discussion time but if they do not want to they can just listen to what the other children say.

Continuous Play: All rooms are now open for Continuous Play; the Pre-School are now able to create their masterpieces in the art and craft area, They also have the choice of playing with the water, in the maths area, home corner and various other activities/areas.

Lessons & Outdoor Play: There is also an opportunity for the children to develop their language skills even further with French lessons every Wednesday and stretch their body and mind with yoga every Tuesday.  Once they have all finished they then have the opportunity for outdoor play on our wide range of safety surfaced areas exploring the natural environment, building dens and much more.

Lunch: We have now reached lunchtime; once again our children wash their hands and sit together for lunch prepared by our cook.  All the children are encouraged to self serve and become independent at doing this.  Every child is given a healthy and nutritional lunch and dessert according to the menu. The menu is on display for parents to view in each room and in the main reception. If a child does not like the food on offer an alternative is provided. The chidren's opinions realy do count and we ask them what there thoughts are each meal time, these are then taken on board and the menu is adjusted accordingly.

Quiet Time: Its quiet time now for those children who need to rest and let their lunch settle. The children are encouraged to choose activities such as puzzles, jigsaws, play in the computer area or read books, for a short period.

Afternoon Session Begins

The afternoon session then starts, again with continuous play in practice; this means the children have the choice to play in their favourite areas from construction to computers, role play to creative play, there is a maths area and a book corner where they can read books or listen to a story on the CD player.

Activities: Our pre school team also plans structured activities with learning outcomes ensuring the children's developmental records as guidance to their next steps.

The children now have even more fun with the team as they encourage the children to express themselves with dance moves. Ring games and lots of new and exciting group activities are also played at this time.

Afternoon Break: Children wash their hands for afternoon break. Our afternoon break differs each day. A typical week will be:

  • Monday: Crumpets with a choice of toppings
  • Tuesday: Soft cheese/Pate with toasted soldiers, cherry tomatoes and fruit
  • Wednesday: Vegetable sticks dips and rice cakes
  • Thursday: Tuna on wholemeal pitta bread, cucumber and celery sticks
  • Friday:  Chicken tortilla wraps

Outdoor Play: The Pre-School children now have the opportunity for outdoor play or the big indoor equipment.  We have waterproof clothing too so come rain or shine we can get out and explore the environment.

Quiet Time/Home time: We gather the children together for some quiet time, reading a book, or playing quietly ready for home time.

The fun doesnt stop there, we have two additional rooms in the pre school, our jumping jacks room is a fun area were the chidlren can burn off some energy diving into the ball pond or jumping on the steps with cause and effect lighting.

Our sandcastles room is a room full of holiday dreams, filled with sand the children can loose themselves on the beach building sandcastles and making patterns.
